Tamworth Conservatives: Standing Up for Local Priorities Amid Local Government Reorganisations

While Others Talk, We’re Taking Action

While other parties are busy drawing up new authorities to secure seats and titles, Tamworth Conservatives are focused on real, pre-reorganisation solutions that deliver for residents today. We’re protecting local assets, championing housing rights, backing community groups, and keeping Tamworth’s money where it belongs — right here in Tamworth.

As discussions around Local Government Reorganisation (LGR) continue, the Tamworth Conservative Group is taking a firm stand to ensure that the voices of local residents are not lost in the process. With Tamworth’s unique identity, heritage, and community at stake, local Conservatives are highlighting key issues that must remain front and centre in any future arrangements.

How Did We Get Here?

Let’s not rewrite history: this crisis is Labour-made.

Labour-led Stoke-on-Trent fired the starting pistol by declaring war on Staffordshire’s structure.
Labour politicians — both locally and nationally — have made it clear they want to get rid of Tamworth Borough Council.
Now that the process is underway, no party can stop Local Government Reorganisation — but only one party is working to protect what matters to Tamworth.

Tenants Must Have a Say
We’re fighting to ensure that council tenants in Tamworth have a real voice in decisions about their housing. Your future shouldn’t be decided by bureaucrats unfamiliar with our community. You deserve to be heard.

Tamworth Conservatives believe that council tenants must have a decisive voice in shaping the future of their housing. “We will champion the rights of tenants to have a say in what happens to council housing in Tamworth,” a Jeremy Oates said. “Our residents deserve to decide their own future – not have it dictated to them by distant authorities unfamiliar with our community.”

Local Money Should Stay Local
Over the years, Tamworth Borough Council has built up significant financial reserves through asset sales, including the golf course. Local Conservatives are clear: this money belongs to Tamworth and must be reinvested locally. Priorities include upgrading council housing stock, preserving the Castle, maintaining the Town Hall, and enhancing parks and open spaces.

Regeneration Must Move Forward

Tamworth’s growth plans are already delivering real improvements. We’re calling for neighbourhood plans across every area to keep progress on track, attract investment, and guide future development.

While other parties position themselves for roles in a restructured future, we’re focused on protecting the progress already happening in Tamworth.
We’re calling for neighbourhood plans in every area to secure long-term investment and ensure residents shape the town’s development.

Safeguarding Sports & Green Spaces
From the rugby club to the athletics stadium, many of Tamworth’s key sports facilities sit on council-owned land. Labour’s plans risk throwing them into uncertainty.

We’re actively exploring local trusts and freehold transfers to ensure these clubs remain in safe hands — not lost in bureaucracy.
Lib Dems and Greens have said nothing on this. We think that says everything.

Protecting Sports and Green Spaces
Many of Tamworth’s sports facilities – including the rugby club, athletics stadium, and football grounds – sit on council-owned land. The Conservatives want each site’s future handled with care and transparency, considering options such as local trusts or freehold transfers to the clubs. Open spaces and nature reserves must also be protected for future generations.

Preserving Our Heritage
Tamworth’s rich history is a source of pride and identity. Local Conservatives are working on community-led solutions — including local trusts and parish partnerships — to ensure our heritage is protected, regardless of structural changes in local government.

Supporting Local Community Groups
Community organisations across Tamworth provide vital support to families and vulnerable residents. The Tamworth Conservatives are asking the difficult questions about whether these groups will continue to receive the funding and backing they currently enjoy. “We cannot allow our local support networks to be overlooked or outcompeted in a wider bureaucratic system,” they warn.

Improving Quality of Life
Clean air, digital access, green space, and affordable energy shouldn’t be lost in reorganisation paperwork.
We’re committed to:
• Preserving open spaces and nature
• Reducing emissions
• Expanding access to broadband
• Supporting energy-efficient homes

Where Are the Other Parties?
Labour triggered this process and now acts as though it’s inevitable — brushing aside the damage to Tamworth’s independence. The Lib Dems and Greens or even reform? Either silent or opportunistic — offering no clear vision, no local protections, and no serious challenge to Labour’s plan.
Only Tamworth Conservatives are standing up for the town we all call home.

Jeremy Oates, Leader of the Conservative group Tamworth Borough Council said “The change to councils is going to be a very complicated process, we are committed to engaging with the public and pushing that their voices are heard. For me this is about protecting Tamworth, our people, our heritage, our culture, our opportunity, our character and our home.”
