Tamworth town centre library reopens on Monday (June 19) after a major eight-month refurbishment.

Having closed in the autumn, Tamworth’s Corporation Street library will reopen in time for the school holidays.

Restocked with thousands of books, staff are already planning celebrations in the autumn to mark the building’s 50th anniversary.

Victoria Wilson, Staffordshire County Council’s Cabinet member for Communities and Culture, said:

“The size and scale of this refurbishment demonstrates our commitment to Tamworth and belief in the value of libraries at the heart of their communities.

This is the fifth new or heavily refurbished library building we have delivered in recent years and we want these spaces to be safe, warm and welcoming for everyone.”

As well as having the heating system updated, electrics checked and the library space refurbished, the Corporation Street site will still offer a flexible community space with a full range of stock and IT.

And as well as books and audiobooks, other services include free Wi-Fi, access to computers, photocopying and printing, plus study areas and a children’s themed area.

Once reopened, the register office will return to the building and the county council’s adult and children’s services will also occupy part of the upper floors after moving from nearby Marmion House, which is earmarked for redevelopment.

Victoria Wilson added:

“With Tamworth Borough Council redeveloping Marmion House, this is an opportunity to bring several county council services together under one roof to make life easier for users and reaffirms our support for the town centre.”
