Conservative Arts Spokesman Visits Tamworth
Monday, 08 June 2009
Shadow Secretary of State for Culture Media and Sport, Jeremy Hunt MP, dropped in on the Tamworth Society of Arts exhibition at the Town Hall last month to pay tribute to the town’s vibrant arts scene.  The Conservative front bencher was welcomed by Tamworth’s Conservative Parliamentary Spokesman, Christopher Pincher, and the town’s Conservative County Council team.

Mr. Hunt toured the exhibition of work by local artists then had tea with the organisers.  He was also on hand to honour the 175th anniversary of Sir Robert Peel’s Tamworth Manifesto which launched the Conservative Party in 1834.  Tamworth’s most famous political figure read his Manifesto from a window of the Town Hall to the crowd below.  He won by a landslide!

Commenting on his visit Mr. Hunt said: Tamworth is an historic town with links going back centuries.  It also has a special place in the history of the Conservative Party because Robert Peel founded it here based on principles of free trade and help for ordinary working people.  I am very pleased to visit and to find the community so vibrant.”   Christopher Pincher added: “I am pleased to welcome Jeremy to our town and show him what is on offer here.  We had a walk around the market before going canvassing in Amington where we had a great response.  Our art exhibition showed off some of the best of Tamworth and I have to go back as I have my eye on a water colour painting of the castle at a bargain price.”
