Tamworth’s Conservative Parliamentary Spokesman, Christopher Pincher, has taken his campaign to save Borough Park, Hopwas & Stonnall Post Offices to Downing Street.  Mr. Pincher handed in a 2000 signature petition to the Prime Minister last Friday.  At the same time he sent a copy to the Post Office together with a submission outlining the reasons for sparing local branches from the axe.

Mr. Pincher said:

“The campaign to stop more Post Office closures is a David and Goliath battle.  The death sentence on our Borough Park, Stonnall and Hopwas branches was written out in March when the government voted to continue the closure programme.  Our campaign has been to try to persuade Gordon Brown not to sign it.  Local people have given us tremendous support.  They have signed my petition, put posters in their windows and written directly to the Post Office.

Mr Pincher Added,

Whatever the result the community can be proud to say it did its best.  We must now hope Gordon Brown recognises the weight of Tamworth’s opposition to these cuts and backs down.  He has backed down on a number of issues recently so I hope we can force him to back down again.”

“Our Post Offices are at the heart of our community and are used by young and old alike.  We do not want any more cuts.”

At the same time as handing in his petition, Mr. Pincher ran a “poster protest” with local Conservative councillors.  They delivered 5000 posters to residents in Hopwas, Tamworth & Stonnall asking people to display them in their windows over the weekend (31st May/1st June).  The community joined in to back its post office with over 100 houses displaying “Save Our Post Office” posters.

Tamworth Councillor Ken Gant said:

“My neighbours are up in arms against this latest round of cuts.  We all put up our posters to show support of our Post Office.  We want our voices to be heard.”

Stonnall Councillor David Smith said:

"Stonnall post office uis a very important post office for the community, we don't want to see it closed."

Conservatives will now wait to hear the result of their submission against closure from the Post Office.

However, they say the campaign for supporters does not stop.  Conservatives are encouraging residents across Tamworth to register their support for Borough Park, Stonnall & Hopwas Post Office.  They have set up a campaign website – www.savepostoffice.co.uk where people can continue to sign the petition against closure.
